what is an ironman?

Ironman, or Iron distance is an endurance based triathlon. It’s place of origin is Hawaii, still home to the annual World Championships.
The term Ironman or Iron Distance refers to a specific set of distances for each discipline. An Ironman distance triathlon is
SWIM: 3.8km, BIKE: 180km, RUN: 42.2km
All disciplines, consecutively, must be completed within a 17-hour time limit.
And though the sport’s origin is Hawaii, there are now (some 30 years after the original event) Ironman events taking place year-round, all over the world. 2011 will mark the last year where Canada holds only one IM sanctioned event. As of 2012, the Ironman franchise will have a new venue in Canada; Ironman Mont Tremblant, in Mont Tremblant, Quebec.
